Why Energy?

Electrical energy is indispensable—the lifeblood of modern, highly-productive societies

Electricity runs everything in our world today. Gas stations can’t pump gas without it, offices close when electricity is unavailable, and the information age goes dark without reliable electrons. There is no place to hide from the "touch" of electric power in any modern city or town. It's everywhere because we need work done. As long as the electricity is available, no one thinks much about it; however, the importance is realized when the power goes out.

Domestic Outlook

The North American Electric Reliability Corporation ("NERC") projects that while peak capacity demand through 2016 will increase by 18%, capacity supply will increase by only 13%, in part due to the increasing difficulties in building new or expanding existing generation projects in the U.S., especially fossil fuel projects. Based on these projections, by 2016, demand for electrical power in the U.S. will exceed available supply.

Global Outlook

In the U.S. Energy Information Administration ("EIA") 2009 reference case (IEO2009), world energy consumption increases from 472 quadrillion Btu in 2006 to 552 quadrillion Btu in 2015 and 678 quadrillion Btu in 2030—a total increase of 44 percent over the projection period.

The exponential growth of the world’s population (currently 6.7 billion people on the planet, but projected to exceed 9 billion by 2050) combined with increased per capita electricity consumption patterns in developing regions of the globe, means that the demand for energy is expected to grossly exceed the Earth’s ability to provide the current level of resources for all. As a result, increased competition for resources is likely to drive electrical energy prices significantly higher.

Because of the vital importance that electricity plays in modern societies throughout the world, it is important to recognize that many trends point to electrical energy shortages and higher prices developing both domestically and abroad. This represents an attractive near- and long-term market opportunity.
